Green spaces play a pivotal role in enhancing the quality of life within our communities. They offer numerous benefits, both tangible and intangible, that contribute to our physical, mental, and social well-being. From providing areas for recreation and relaxation to supporting local biodiversity and mitigating the effects of climate change, green spaces are essential components of sustainable and resilient neighbourhoods.
In the context of neighbourhood planning, green spaces are integral to shaping the character and identity of an area. They reflect the values, aspirations, and priorities of the community, serving as focal points for social interaction, cultural activities, and community engagement. By preserving and enhancing green spaces, neighbourhood plans can help to create vibrant, inclusive, and liveable communities where people want to live, work, and play.
The 'Langley Burrell Neighbourhood Plan' recognises the importance of green spaces and their contribution to the overall quality of life in our Parish.
The NP designates two areas based on community feedback. The Steering Committee for the 2024 plan have decided that there aren't any additional green spaces that meet the criteria for designation at this time.
The Village Hall Sports Field has recently become the home for the Langley Burrell Cricket Club, with improvements made to accommodate cricket activities. As an alternative to providing a dedicated Cricket Pavilion, the Parish Council is exploring the possibility of expanding the Village Hall to improve showering and changing facilities and enhancing catering services.
In the consultation for the original Neighbourhood Plan, 44% of respondents classified the Village Hall Sports Field as extremely important, with an additional 24% considering it fairly important. The field plays a pivotal role in hosting village events such as the village fete and various activities. It has also received enquiries for usage from beyond the Parish. When evaluated against the NPPF77 criteria, the field's close proximity to the village hall, its versatility for multi-sport usage, and its expansive size, roughly equivalent to three football pitches, underscore its special value and local character.
The Open Space in Front of Oakhurst is recognised for its recreational and communal significance. Local children frequently use it for games, and they even took the initiative to fundraise for goal posts. This space is highly cherished by residents for its contribution to the village's open and loose-knit character. Moreover, it features an ancient tree, enhancing its aesthetic and historical appeal. During village events, such as the Chippenham folk festival, this area serves as a popular meeting point. When assessed using the NPPF77 criteria, the Oakhurst green's central location, its significance as a youth recreational area, and its size, approximately one football pitch, confirm its importance, special value, and local character.
